Why You Keep Self-Sabotaging (Even When You Want to Change)

There’s something many women quietly carry that they rarely talk about.
The frustration of knowing what they want…knowing what they should be doing…yet still finding themselves holding back.
Procrastinating.
Overthinking.
Avoiding opportunities.
Doubting themselves.
Starting and stopping.
And then wondering:
“Why do I keep doing this to myself?”
If you’ve ever felt like you’re getting in your own way, you’re not alone.
Self-sabotage isn’t usually loud or obvious.
It often shows up in subtle, everyday ways.
Putting things off even though they matter to you.
Talking yourself out of opportunities.
Overthinking decisions until you do nothing at all.
Giving up quickly when things don’t feel perfect.
Staying in your comfort zone even when you’re unhappy there.
From the outside, it can look like a lack of motivation or discipline.
But most of the time, it’s something much deeper.
Self-sabotage is often a form of self-protection.
When your nervous system doesn’t feel safe with change, visibility, success or even happiness, it will try to keep you where things feel familiar — even if familiar isn’t fulfilling.
Your mind may tell you:
“What if I fail?”
“What if I embarrass myself?”
“What if I can’t keep it up?”
“What will people think?”
So instead of moving forward, you pause.
Not because you’re incapable — but because a part of you is trying to protect you from discomfort, judgement or disappointment.
Sometimes self-sabotage comes from perfectionism.
The belief that if something can’t be done perfectly, it’s safer not to do it at all.
Sometimes it comes from self-doubt.
Not fully trusting yourself to follow through or succeed.
Sometimes it comes from low self-worth — feeling like you don’t deserve the life you want, even if you’d never say that out loud.
And sometimes it comes from simply being stuck in patterns you’ve lived in for so long that they feel normal.
But here’s the gentle truth.
You are not lazy.
You are not broken.
And you are not incapable of change.
You’ve just been operating from patterns that were created to keep you safe — not necessarily to help you grow.
Real change doesn’t come from criticising yourself or forcing harsh discipline.
It comes from understanding yourself.
Learning why you hold back.
Learning what triggers the shutdown or avoidance.
Learning how to build self-trust and emotional safety within yourself.
Because when you feel safer within yourself, you no longer need to get in your own way.
You begin to follow through on the things that matter.
You start making decisions with more confidence.
You take small steps forward instead of staying stuck in your head.
Not perfectly.
Not all at once.
But consistently.
Self-sabotage begins to lose its power when you stop fighting yourself and start supporting yourself instead.
You don’t need to become a completely different person to move forward in your life. You just need to understand yourself better — and learn how to work with yourself instead of against yourself.
And that’s where real confidence begins.
Not in perfection.
Not in having everything figured out.
But in knowing you can trust yourself to keep going, even when things feel uncomfortable.
Because the moment you stop getting in your own way…is the moment your life begins to open.
